I just wanted to eat my lunch in silence.
I'm all for meeting new people, don't get me wrong. But there is a time and a place for everything and while eating lunch is not the time for introductions and get-to-know-you's. In my book, that is.
I tried to look like I didn't want to be disturbed. I chose a table by a column so I could partially hide behind it, set my laptop up, and stared at my food. I had all the classic characteristics of one not wanting to be disturbed. That did not bother Kyle and Eric. A few bites into my meal a tall, nerdy looking guy leaned over from the table behind me and introduced himself. I responded properly and acted cordial but returned quickly to my food. He just leaned in even further and invited me to sit with him and his friend, Eric. I wanted to decline. I wanted to so so badly. But then it would have been so awkward the whole time having them right there after so rude a denial. So I took a huge deep breath and promised myself I could after I had made at least decent conversation. Besides, the Eric one was kinda cute and Kyle was funny.
I hate making the small talk involved in introductions. It's so awful. Ugh. We chatted for a while and discussing missions and majors and especially.. dating. Dating? These two guys would not stop talking about their dating lives. They were acting so girly about it! Holy crap, guys, geez. I just remained quiet and listened to their obnoxious stories. Then they asked about my dating life, I said I dated a lot last semester but have settled down. Kyle asked where I live. "Wyview." Haha, just the reaction I was expecting and dreading.. "OH! You're a freshman??" both obviously losing interest in me. "Yeah, yeah.. I am..." Eric said he was impressed, that he hadn't thought someone as mature as mysef {HA.} would be that young. That didn't matter though, the next seven or ten minutes were horribly awkward. So I politely excused myself and went to study, thanking them for the fun lunch and getting to know them.
That's when I decided I will now be wearing an engagement ring as extra precaution against unwanted conversations and lying about my age so no one judges me for being a little freshman.
